Except for a couple of trips into Deals Only I can't recall the last time I shopped in Astoria. Don't live on the NE end of town so don't shop in Safeway. Don't own my house so don't shop at any of the hardware stores.

Can't think of a shop in downtown Warrenton.

Don't know of any shops in Seaside except tourist traps or factory outlets.

Rarely have much left over from the paycheck to do much more than plan which of the kiddies gets a new pair of shoes, bag of socks or underwear this month.

I am pleased as punch that we finally are getting a WalMart in the area. They can slug it out with Freddies to see which one can offer me the best deal.

I am tired of the arguments from the anti everything people. How many of the little shops downtown are union? How many of them are offering their clerks health benefits? Very, very few, I can't think of one. Not puting the small stores down, but it is one of the arguments I hear against having a WalMart. They don't offer "competitive' benefits for employees. Compared to who?

Another argument I hear is that "we" don't want that strip of highway looking like "Texas or Longview". TEXAS??? What the heck does that mean??? Whatever. Staring at a bunch of alders is "beautiful"??? They're dang weeds! These people should have protested the making of a NorthCoast Business Park long time ago, not challenge each and every business tries to go into it!

Ye gawds! These people make me want to puke.

Just ONCE in awhile I'd like to see them BRING SOMETHING BIG here. Not some rinky-dink hotel where we have the privilege of waiting on their elite friends hand and foot but an actual industry providing living wages and a solid tax base.

You think any of the gossip mongers will stop yappin long enough to bring some thin good here?

I just read that WalMart has done away with their layaway plan. One of the last to have one.

I think that the layaway is one of the best ideas. Astoria or Seaside Chambers could do something very similar, you know.

They could introduce the "chamber" card. People could deposit money into their "chamber" cards each week or month and participating stores could offer special deals to chamber card holders.

It could be like a "debit" card or a "flex" card, not a charge card. Can only use the money that's in there. Using a local bank so the money stays local and is being used locally!

Win-win all around. People are saving money for special occasions, spending money at local businesses, building relationships with the local businesses. Local businesses are advertising the use of the "chamber" card, getting more people to use and participate in local chambers and local businesses.

Savvy shoppers look at the ads and coupons from Freddies, Slaveway and Shopko then just take them all to Wallyworld where they are honored. Wallmart saves a bundle on advertising and the customer gets one stop shopping.

Jeff Nelson, at KAST writes:

Quote:
About twenty-one local residents attend an organizational meeting in Astoria Thursday night for "Citizens For Responsible Development," the group formed by residents Lori Durheim and Ted Thomas to stop Wal-Mart from building in Warrenton. Election of officers is tabled for the time being; the consensus of the group is that the next meeting on November 5th should be held in Warrenton with a larger public meeting to follow there. And the group agrees that Warrenton should be the focus of the lobbying against the store since that's where the store is planned. No word if any of the attendees support the store; no support is voiced. Discussion includes the need to offer input to the city commission and planning commission, as well as local churches and community groups. The group doesn't rule out the possibility of a referendum on the issue in the City of Warrenton.

Warrenton Mayor Gil Gramson's Monday morning coffee klatch at city hall with the public is also suggested as an opportunity to weigh in. But, Astoria resident Sara Meyer says, "There is some perceived fear, rather or not it's real or not, is if you go against Gil Gramson, that he'll come after you. I don't have any personal experience with that. Twenty years, maybe thirty years, there's been a common feeling. Meyer says she doesn't oppose other big box stores, only Wal-Mart because of low wages and lack of support to the community. Meyer says property owner Martin Nygaard successfully negotiated with the state to fill wetlands and mitigate by providing other land valued at $500,000 to the North Coast Land Conservancy. Warrenton city planner Carol Parker also on the record as stating that the city hasn't seen any local development permit applications.

Organizer Lori Durheim says the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce has quickly scheduled showing of the film, "Walmart: The High Price of Low Price." Durheim says, "A lot of them wanted to come out against Wal-Mart publicly, but then they learned from Warrenton and Seaside and Astoria Chamber of Commerce, you've gotta poll. So, they're polling their numbers now and if the members agree, they will come out publicly in Cannon Beach because they're worried about traffic and their businesses to some extent." Durheim says the Seaside Chamber of Commerce was not as receptive, and the Greater Astoria-Warrenton Chamber less so: "Everybody put on a stone face.don't smile." Ted Thomas adds, "To start off with, it wasn't show and tell. It was, 'this is for you guys to watch, why don't you watch it?' And they just handed it around and they kind of almost didn't want to touch it. They didn't want to get contaminated by it." Thomas says the movie was accepted with "great reluctance" and the door closed behind Thomas and Durheim.

Thomas says remaining adjacent property owners are indifferent to siting of the store. And Thomas says Nygaard moved quickly to consolidate his holdings from other then adjacent property owners; he says Warrenton Fiber owns half of the site and Martin Nygaard's sons, David and John each own one-fourth. Thomas says he thinks Wal-Mart will receive sizeable tax breaks as he believes Home Depot did.

Thomas says there was talk about Wal-Mart previously wanting to locate at Inverness Farms near Miles-Crossing, but says that talk quickly evaporated when then county commissioner Richard Lee was recalled from office.

A threat from Thomas, surprise, surprise, surprise! YEAH Right! Walmart pulled out cause Lee was recalled, whatever Thomas. Nothing you say can be trusted.

And those people showed their true colors, once again, thursday night. Calling an "executive session" for their make believe group of naysayers so they could make Nelson turn off his recorder! Since they aren't a "real" group, haven't legally formed, they can't be charged with misconduct or anything. Their like little children playing at being adults. None of them have any responsibilities and therefore they think nothing of screwing with all of our lives.

The people in this area need to know that this (same) group is directly affecting their choices and their pocketbook.

Wanna bet IF Scheller was there he sat way in the back and kept pretty quiet? Even he is getting heart burn spending so much time with these haters.

The National Enquirer? OH, we don't need that, already have the gossip rag, Daily Astorian.

Maybe we can hope for that tsunami to hit and wipe a bunch of them out. Solve the carbon foot print problem too, all in one fell swoop!

Thomas is making stuff up. Tom Iverson made up the Walmart rumor as a joke. Neither he nor the buyer of the farm, Henry Hinke ever had contact with Walmart. Thomas is just perpetuating an urban myth.

Since Thomas has never had a job or had a business in Clatsop County, how would anyone percieve him as any kind of leader? He's just a bum, he has no family nor responsibility to anyone around here. Just likes to imagine himself as some sage or something-he's really just a bum

Walmart will be built. Walmart will drive prices down at Fred Meyers and Safeway, aren't they both owned by kroger, which also buys from China.
The shops in downtown will remain the same as long as they give "good service".
The cruise ships help some.
The best shopping you can do is shop at a local store.

I thought Jim Neikes was the current owner of Iverson Farms property and isn't that Harry Hinke?

Hinky was the one that purchased it from the Iversons for 6.5m. Not sure if the deal is still on since he is surrendering his assets left and right. Not sure how the deal was set up if it was all paid up front, but if it wasn't I'm sure he'd have to sell the contract at this point. I haven't seen Tom and Suzanne for a while, but they are still living there.

Somewhere around 14 to 17 if I remember correctly, but what drove up the value was it went from RA to Commercial zoning and they just added a sewer in Jeffers Gardens. Commercial land with a sewer is like gold for investors. It makes me wonder how long that golf course will remain once that area starts to explode.

$434,000 an acre?

At Miles Crossing?

The original site for.......WAL-MART!!!!....perhaps, before Nygaard made his move?

Perfect access to a potential Good Sam Club Campground and Golf Course huh?

Ahhhhh, the gossip monger hits again.

Never the "original site" of WalMart.

Any proof it was the "original site"?

Nah.

Isn't it amusing how a shitload of documentation is laid out on certain subjects and McGee will say, "but where's the REAL proof" or completely change the subject. But when there's not a drop of evidence he loves to run with the gossip mill?

Ran the search engine there and though the name Iverson pops up for a few lots and houses around the county-nothing in the Miles Crossing area bore that name. Ran "Hinke" and "Hinky" and that brought up nothing at all.
