According to Sheriff Bergin's website over on the Oregon State Sheriff's Association Bergin is still intent on wasting our money with his DARE program.
I want to know how many people going through the Drug Court were subjected to the DARE program in school. That is a statistic I would be interested in.
Another thing that Bergin is after, of course, is "replacement of the present jail which is inadequate for today's needs." Yet, rumor has it that court proceedings are DOWN, DOwn, down! Hardly can keep the third judge's docket filled. All it is is a bunch of tickets. Look at the docket, not a reason to have 10 ADAs and secretaries on staff. No reason to build another jail!
Suddenly, the DA is BEGGING for more felonies to prosecute, grand juries to indict more people. Poor Mexicans will be harassed big time by Bergins guys this Christmas season to justify that jail. Watch the numbers increase right now. Bergin will be told that it is safe for his guys to harass the Mexicans since the economy is tight and people want them to go home since they will be seen as a drain on it. Funny thing is, they won't be going home, they will be going into our jails for us to continue to pay for and instead of them adding to the tax base they will just be sitting in jail bleeding it.
But its all about appearances. Bergin will LOOK like he is doing his job, picking up the "bad guys" (um, who is it they are selling for and to?) and he gets his new jail. The DA gets to justify his staff and maybe another raise for his stipend (maybe he can get that pony back, we'll see how Rohn handles that one). And we all will feel better that a bunch of people are sitting in jail serving out terms BEFORE they are deported while we pay our taxes and make others look better.

Interesting idea on the politics of the new jail. But, are you suggesting that Sheriff Bergin is actually smart enough to plot a scheme to fill the jail or even to arrest more people? If he is, what has he been doing these last four years besides collecting his large salary and having coffee?

No, the jail is not needed! We must take care of the problem at the Transistion Center. I was shocked when I read about the drugs being brought into the center. Where are the controls? How many times has this happened? I liked all aspects of the center, wondering if they receive any help from staff to help with addiction? Thanks to the two girls for admitting , I'm sure they were afraid.

Does anyone know where the Sheriff's plan to improve the jail has gone? Also, how about his plan to deal with drugs in the County? He said he would accomplish at least some of these in his first term and it's now his second term. What is he waiting for?

Well, from this overwhelming response to what the Sheriff has done in his first term (let alone so far in his second) it seems like we have elected a guy that picks up his $90,000 a year for doing nothing. Perhaps that is true of what Oregon sheriffs' expect of themselves while in office. Stay low, keep quiet and do nothing that raises attention to their management and leadershop abilities.

I think we need to understand that the Sheriff is doing his best to deal with the jail situation and drugs in the county. But, we also need to understand that Tom simply lacks the political and managerial skills to move these or any projects forward. He is good at having coffee with his friends at Miles Crossing every day, chopping wood and whining about trees. But that's it. We wanted a good old boy sheriff who would do nothing, and that is what we got. Considering the history of sheriffs in Clatsop County, we will have good old Tom for another 30 years, so don't expect anything from his office for that time.
