I, for one, am so tired of infanticing our young adults. At seventeen years and 11 months they are too young to hear us toot our horns when they hit a home run or shout "air ball" when they miss a shot but one month later they can carry a gun and kill someone in a war???

CRIPES get a grip on reality, people, get a grip! I pay the taxes for these sports. I PAY THE TAXES TO SUPPORT THESE SPORTS. And I am sick and tired of the direction they are taking.

I am tired of them being in our schools, honestly. The least amount of control that the state has over them the better. Lets privatize them. They would have more fun, be more profitable and allow those who don't want their money wasted on them not to waste their money on it.

New sports rules restrict unruly fans

“Air ball! Air ball!” used to be a common cheer heard in high school basketball games around the state of Oregon, when an opponent missed the basket altogether. Such a cheer is now prohibited by a new set of rules handed down by the Oregon School Activities Association this fall. Other kinds of cheers that are no longer allowed are ones that single out specific players (“You! You! You!”) and ones that use artificial noisemakers such as cowbells and air horns.

The new sportsmanship rules restrict certain types of negative fan conduct, according to Jason Boyd, Athletic Director of Seaside High School. “The rules changes are really for the fans,” he said. The OSAA determined that the climate at some high school athletic events had become too negative and handed down an executive policy designed to take care of the situation.

“The high school principal, coach and other responsible officials of each member school shall take all reasonable measures to insure that the school's students and supporters maintain a sportsmanlike attitude toward all events so that events may be conducted without unreasonable danger or disorder,” says OSAA rule 3.3 in its general statement. Some of the specific fan behaviors now prohibited in Executive Board Policy 67 were quite common and had been used for years.

“The most noticeable change are you can no longer cheer against your opponent and the first row of bleachers (indoors) needs to be left vacant,” said Boyd. Other behaviors that are now prohibited are throwing objects on the floor, use of signs (by fans) larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, and going shirtless, with or without paint on the upper torso.

While some fans may see some of the rules too restrictive, Boyd said they are designed “to promote a positive atmosphere for athletes to compete in. This is not the pros or college (where the fan atmosphere is more aggressive). Our youth are still developing behavior traits and habits. As adults we in the school and community need to model the correct example for our youth to learn from,” he said.

Boyd added that he has not heard any negative comments about the new rules. “We have always tried to have a higher standard,” he said. “Last year’s girls varsity basketball team won the sportsmanship trophy at the state tournament.”
